s remarkable journey began in pre-World War II Vienna on August 15,1929. Among his earliest memories is his mother's declaration that he was to become a professor of medicine. These years were marked by a pleasant Viennese social life and immersion in the opera, which instilled in him a lifelong love of music. In 1938, his family, as did many others, left for political asylum, first in Switzerland, and then in England where they spent more than a year before moving to New York City.
