We show that LISA should detect the ringdown radiation emitted by newly formed, oscillating massive black holes with large signal‐to‐noise ratio and measure the characteristic (quasi‐normal) frequencies of the oscillations with great accuracy throughout the observable Universe, providing accurate estimates of the black holes’ mass and angular momentum. Under reasonable assumptions LISA’s signal‐to‐noise ratio should be large enough to allow tests of the Kerr nature of astrophysical black holes, i.e. tests of the no‐hair theorem of general relativity.
