Recent developments in the field of ultra-soft x-ray emission spectoscopy have opened up several new possibilities for research in atomic, molecular and solid state physics. Monochromatized synchrotron radiation has become available for selective excitation of ultra-soft x-ray fluorescence spectra, recorded in high resolution. Substantial advancements have taken place in the experimental techniques used to record highly resolved emission spectra of free molecules, excited by electron beam. This progress is discussed with regard to the new experimental developments and to current research in various fields. Some lines of direction, along which ultra-soft x-ray spectroscopy is likely to develop further are pointed out.
