Summary This series of papers is devoted to the investigation of the extent to which the accuracy of operation of multidimensional scaling methods can be put onto a quantitative footing. This first paper is concerned to provide a simple but clear and convincing development of procrustes analysis, the technique used for assessing the goodness-of-fit between two configurations. Although some of the results offered are new, it is largely a review paper designed to provide a basis for further work
