The study examines and compares participation in sports during leisure time on the one hand and spectatorship and interest in sport as a leisure pursuit on the other hand. The examination concentrates on the following questions: a. Are the two modes of leisure related to each other? b. Are they associated with the same background and socialization? c. Is the motivational structure behind them similar? d. Do they constitute a unitary leisure style? Four hundred and eighty Israeli males were interviewed for the study. The analysis includes examination of correlation coefficients and discriminant analyses performed on two subsets of subjects: a group of individuals who are not physically active during their leisure time but are characterized by a high level of interest and spectatorship and a group of individuals who are physically active but have a low level of interest and spectatorship. The results highlight the differences between the two sport-related types of leisure behavior.
