Editor's Note: For China's educational undertakings to be geared to the needs of the four modernizations, the world, and the future and to be capable of training large numbers of specialized personnel of all categories who are both socialist-minded and professionally proficient, we must carry out the educational reform in a planned way. Reforming college entrance examinations is an important component of the reform of higher education and an urgent task confronting us. To promote the reform and activate the study of college entrance examinations, this journal, starting with this issue, carries a special column on "discussions on how to reform the college enrollment system." Its content includes exploration of the inadaptabilities between the existing enrollment system and the modernization drive, clarification on the necessity and significance of reform, the guiding thought and basic orientation of reform, concrete proposals and plans for reform, the experiences of the experiment on reform, etc.
