The monomer reactivity ratio in copolymerization reactions has been interpreted by F UKUI and others in terms of the conjugation stabilization energy, E RM , between the monomer and attacking radical. The authors tried to resolve the stabilization energy into four terms by an equation, E RM = E + E R + E M + E' RM , where E was the stabilization energy between polyethylene radical and ethylene monomer, E R and E M were the increments in the stabilization energies of systems of (substituted polyethylene radical — ethylene monomer) and (polyethylene radical — substituted ethylene monomer) with respect to E as standard. E' RM was referred to as “the surplus conjugation stabilization energy”. Good correspondence of Q with E M , P with E R , and e RM with E' RM was observed which seemed to suggest the validity of the above equation.
