This paper describes appropriate statistical methodology for assessing the repeatability and relative merits of the visual analogue scale and verbal descriptive scale as methods of pain measurement for use in randomized clinical trials of alternative therapies requiring patient self-assessment. A single-blind randomized trial of transcutaneous nerve stimulation versus a placebo control of mock transcutaneous nerve stimulation as therapy for low back pain is used for illustration.
