The study determined the relationship between work engagement, organisational commitment, job resources and job demands of teachers (N = 117) working within two historically disadvantaged high schools in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. A cross-sectional design was used (N = 117). Participants completed the following self-report measures: a demographic questionnaire, the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES; Schaufeli, Salanova, Gonzalez-Roma, Allen Jackson & Rothmann, 2005). Findings indicated job resources and challenge job demands to be positivly related to work engagement, while hindrance job demands were found to be negativly related to work engagement. Job resources were found to be predictive of work engagement. Work engagement mediated the relationship between job demands and organizational commitment.
