Investigates shielding performance in bismuth silicate glasses, suggesting improved alternatives to lead-based materials.
Bismuth silicate glasses have occurred as promising materials due to their favorable structural and physic-chemical properties. However, their shielding efficiency is subject to structural changes and modifications to improve and achieve optimal compositions. This research investigates the replacement of MgO with SrO to enhance the shielding properties of bismuth silicate glasses with the chemical composition 20LiF-15MgO-5SrO-20Bi 2 O 3 -40SiO 2 . Physical properties showed that SrO promoted a more depolymerized network, increased non-bridging oxygen content and weakens the strength of the glass structure. The SrO/MgO substitution also resulted in a slight decrease in the chemical stability and mechanical strength properties of the prepared glasses. XCOM, Py-MLBUF and Py-AMA.Seidy were used in the investigations of shielding characteristics of doped bismuth silicate glasses were impacted by the substitution of SrO/MgO. Important metrics such as MAC, LAC, and Z e f f displayed distinct behaviors based on the γ E. The accumulation factor in single and double layers of glass samples was also investigated in the study. MgO content enhanced shielding properties at 15 keV and above 0.08 MeV due its low K-edge and higher electrons/gram values compared to SrO which showed higher performance in mid region (20–80 KeV) due to its larger photoelectric cross-section. Mr 5 and Mr 5 -Mr 5 have the best single layer and D-layer EBF/EBF efficiency, respectively, while Mr 20 -Mr 5 and Mr 20 -Mr 10 showed the lowest DLEBF and DLEABF values especially around 0.08 MeV. The novelty of this work lies in the preparation of a new SrO/MgO bismuth silicate glass in varying quantities SrO and MgO to serve as a new, sustainable, inexpensive, higher performance, and environmentally friendly alternative to lead-based radiation shielding glass materials.
