Key result
COVID-19 and delayed ECMO linked to higher nursing workload in the first 24 hours.
Why the study?
To identify the factors associated with nursing workload in patients undergoing extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.
Cohort (n=155)
No

Guideli et al. (2025) conducted a cohort in Patients undergoing extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) (n=155). COVID-19 diagnosis and delayed ECMO initiation vs. Patients without COVID-19 / earlier ECMO initiation was evaluated on Nursing Activities Score (NAS) in the initial 24 hours of ECMO (Estimate 7.112, 95% CI 2.12-4.43, p=0.005). The presence of COVID-19 and delayed initiation of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation significantly increased nursing workload during the initial 24 hours of support.
