Abstract

A composite negative electrode for lithium ion batteries was made by adhering ball milled Si-Fe alloy particles with a glass ionomer cement. The composite thus formed was robust and could be ground from a monolithic mass to any desired particle size. The resulting particles remained intact during the slurry mixing/coating process, had significantly reduced surface area compared to ball milled alloys and improved cycling performance. This work provides a possible method for the development of low specific surface area alloy anode materials with good cycling characteristics.
