In 1948, Thiersch and Philips observed that two or three doses of the potent folic acid antagonist 4-Amino-PGA when given in the first trimester of pregnancy to the mother animals destroyed the litters of mice, rats, and a dog without intoxicating the maternal organism seriously. This observation led at once to further studies with antimetabolites in the control of reproduction in rats. These experiments are reviewed here from the following points of view:
