Abstract Commercially available collagen membrance was evaluated as a hemodialysis membrane in the Kolff quad‐coil artificial kidney. The inherent physical weakness of the membrane was strengthened by a double‐screen support substracture in a coil. Greater metabolite clearance and ultrafiltration (over four times) were demonstrated with the double‐screen‐supported collagen coil than with either cellophane or cuprophane membrane supported by the same double‐screen support substructure.
