Demonstrates enhanced beamwidth and lower SAR in wearable antennas for biomedical use.
This work presents a broad‐beam traveling‐wave antenna implemented using Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW) technology. The antenna is designed to operate in the 5.8 GHz ISM band and supports conformal applications. Broad‐beam radiation in the H‐plane is achieved through a strategically placed H‐shaped slot on the top surface of the SIW section. The customized shape of the slot enables a strong coupling with the magnetic field of the mode. The antenna has been tested for both planar and conformal configurations. For biomedical applications, a 3 dB beamwidth of up to 146° has been demonstrated on muscle tissue. Specific absorption rate is also simulated on muscle and fat tissues. The low values of SAR allow higher power application up to 1.56 W for muscle and 1.57 W for fat tissue while complying with SAR safety standards.
