Randomized trial demonstrates effective synthesis of alkynylated tetrahydrofuran derivatives using Au(I) catalysis, indicating a new method in organic synthesis.
This study explores the possibility of operating a previously unsuccessful Au(I)‐catalyzed C(sp 3 )–C(sp) cross‐coupling. While the photosensitization conditions previously used for the C(sp 2 )–C(sp) cross‐coupling reaction with vinylgold(I) intermediates were not successful with alkylgold(I) complexes, the use of the MeDalPhosAuCl complex as a catalyst under thermal conditions provided moderate to good yields of C(sp 3 )‐alkynylated adducts, particularly alkynylated tetrahydrofuran derivatives. Mechanistic studies revealed the formation of an Au(III) intermediate, resulting from oxidative addition of the alkynyl iodide partner onto the Au(I) complex bearing the hemilabile MeDalPhos ligand.
