• The potential use of PPE wastes in asphalt pavement construction was reviewed. • The modification mechanism, morphological characterisation, physical properties, and rheological performance of PPE-modified bitumens were investigated. • The volumetric properties and pavement performance of the PPE-asphalt mixtures were studied. • The recommended dosages of PPE wastes were provided. • The use of PPE wastes is exceptionally viable in asphalt pavement construction. The widespread outbreak of diseases such as COVID-19 has significantly increased use and disposal of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Plastic-based PPE wastes, including masks, gloves, and gowns, have caused severe environmental pollution. Recycling PPE waste in asphalt pavement construction is a promising solution for advancing sustainable development strategies. This study reviews significant findings from existing literature concerning the utilisation of PPE wastes in bitumen and asphalt. The review encompasses several aspects: (1) Clarification of the research background and current challenges; (2) Examination of disinfection processes for PPE wastes; (3) Assessment of recycling methods for incorporating PPE wastes into bitumen and asphalt; (4) Evaluation of the effect of incorporating PPE wastes on the performance of bitumen and asphalt mixture; (5) Discussion of the current research limitations and recommendations for future studies. Compelling evidence from this review suggests that PPE wastes are viable and sustainable construction materials for asphalt pavement applications.
