Key result
Both short and long sleep durations are linked to reduced HRV.
Why the study?
Extending healthy life expectancy in aging societies requires lifestyle improvements such as ensuring adequate sleep duration, prompting investigation into how sleep duration relates to heart rate variability in older adults.
Does sleep duration affect heart rate variability in older adults?
Observational (n=55,154)
Does sleep duration affect heart rate variability in older adults?
Both insufficient and excessive sleep durations are associated with reduced heart rate variability in older adults, highlighting the importance of optimal sleep for autonomic function.

Yuda et al. (2025) conducted an observational in Older adults (n=55,154). Sleep duration vs. Different sleep duration groups (G1-G4) was evaluated on Heart rate variability (HRV) metrics (MRRI, SDRR, ULF, LF, HF, and LF/HF). Both short and long sleep durations were associated with significant differences in heart rate variability metrics, suggesting both insufficient and excessive sleep contribute to HRV reduction.
