A multiple-case study design was used to assess nurse aid behavior change in a nursing home following an educational program. Subjects included 23 nurse aids, 11 experimental and 12 comparison subjects. The educational program intended to increase empathy and independent-supportive behaviors and decrease dependent-supportive behaviors or nurse aids in their interactions with elderly residents. Experimental subjects were significantly more empathetic (p = .025) and promoted elder dependence less (p = .003) than comparison subjects, suggesting that behavior change to decrease learned helpless behaviors is possible. Nurse aids suggested that similar programs be introduced early in their careers to avoid dependent-supportive habits that are learned over time.
