Definitions and terminology describing children's body weight vary among health professionals, scientists, parents, and children themselves. The 2000 growth charts published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provide guidelines for assessing body mass index (BMI) by age for children 2 to 20 years old. This article discusses the growth charts and presents two tools for use in assessing the BMI of children. Family and child perception of body size is important in identifying overweight children and planning strategies to prevent and treat this growing health problem. Nutrition professionals can take the lead in applying these methods when working with families, caretakers, community, and commercial health agencies.
