This paper presents the results of a study of the records of the recording rain gauge at Chestnut Hill Reservoir in Boston, Mass., covering a term of 50 Jears, and durations of heavy rain up to 72 hours. Curves of intensity of precipitation, corresponding to any period of time up to 72 hours, for various frequencies of occurrence are derived and discussed. The form of curve showing the relation between the duration and the (average) intensity of precipitation is discussed, and the possibility of the application to other localities of the general formula herein derived, with the coefficients and exponents suitably modified, is suggested.
