A prognostic index has been derived in a group of 1186 primary operable breast cancer patients. This index has then been compared with that previously derived by Haybittle et al1 and prospectively validated by Todd et al.2 It has been verified that the Haybittle et al index is still valid in a multicentre study and can be used to predict survival up to 10 years.
