Targeting tissue perfusion in high risk surgical patients significantly reduces postoperative mortality.
Supports perfusion-targeted protocols in high-risk surgery; confirms mortality benefit in Level 1 meta-analysis.
Objective: To review published work on care of perioperative high risk surgical patients with particular regard to studies targeting tissue perfusion. Design: A review of the published literature using all sources was undertaken. Subjects: High risk surgical patients. Results: Fourteen studies which have specifically targeted tissue perfusion in high risk surgical patients were identified. Meta-analysis showed a total of 1132 patients had been studied and the odds ratio for improvement in mortality in the study groups was 0.32 (95% CI 0.21-0.47). Conclusion: Published work suggests that targeting tissue perfusion in high risk surgical patients significantly reduces postoperative mortality.

Owen Boyd (1999) conducted a meta-analysis in High risk surgical patients (n=1,132). Targeting tissue perfusion was evaluated on Postoperative mortality (OR 0.32, 95% CI 0.21-0.47). Targeting tissue perfusion in high risk surgical patients significantly reduced postoperative mortality (OR 0.32; 95% CI 0.21-0.47).
