This article reports the results of a survey of members of the Product Development and Management Association conducted in April 1990. A central purpose of the research was to obtain information about the career characteristics of new product professionals, and relate it to their level of financial compensation. Information is also provided relative to educational preparation, markets served, job characteristics, and new product responsibilities. Where appropriate, the situations of practitioners, consultants and academics are compared on these factors.
