Cytological evaluation of pleural fluid identified epithelioid angiosarcoma as the initial presentation in a 52-year-old patient 3 years after treatment for invasive lobular breast carcinoma.
Case Report (n=1)
This case report highlights the cytological features of epithelioid angiosarcoma in pleural fluid to assist in the challenging differential diagnosis of this rare and aggressive vascular neoplasm.
Raises awareness for secondary angiosarcoma in post-breast cancer pleural effusions; leaves open need for larger series to refine diagnostic criteria.
Epithelioid angiosarcoma is a rare vascular neoplasm with an aggressive clinical course and poor prognosis. The cytological diagnosis of epithelioid angiosarcoma is challenging. Herein, we describe the cytological features of epithelioid angiosarcoma in a pleural fluid as the initial presentation of angiosarcoma in a 52-year-old patient 3 years after mastectomy and radiation therapy for invasive lobular carcinoma of the breast. We describe the cytological characteristics of epithelioid angiosarcoma in body fluid specimens and the differential diagnosis.
