Substance abuse among health professionals, serious though rarely acknowledged, affects the well-being of many professionals and their patients. Relatively little has been done to develop preventive programs. This paper reviews current and past programs at health science centers in the USA - primary, secondary, and tertiary - aimed at preventing substance abuse and addiction.
