Offers descriptive phonocardiographic patterns in non-rheumatic MR; hypothesis-generating and requires validation before clinical use.
Twenty-one patients with severe non-rheumatic mitral regurgitation due to rupture or stretching of the mitral chordae tendineae have been investigated by phonocardiography, left ventricular displacement records, and external carotid records. The findings have been related to the haemodynamic derangement measured at car- diac catheterization, the anatomical lesion seen at open heart operation, and the aetiology. Left ventricular function has been assessed by angiographically determined ejection fraction.
