May warrant heightened caution with ischemia in hypertrophied hearts; leaves open targeted cardioprotection for prospective trials.
Cardiac hypertrophy is very common in our society, affecting 15 to 20% of adults in the general population [1] and nearly 90% of hospitalized, adult, cardiac patients [2] in North America. Pressure overload cardiac hypertrophy is a well-recognized risk factor for the development of sudden death, myocardial infarction and congestive heart failure [3]. Hypertrophied hearts are also more susceptible to injury after ischemia and reperfusion than normal hearts [4–7].
