Quasi-experimental study evaluates AETCOM module's impact on teamwork skills in medical students, suggesting effective training.
Introduction: Effective teamwork is essential for quality healthcare delivery. The Attitude, Ethics and Communication (AETCOM) module introduced by the National Medical Commission aims to develop teamwork competencies among Indian Medical Graduates. This study evaluates the acceptability and effectiveness of the AETCOM module 2.4 in teaching teamwork skills to medical undergraduates in North Gujarat. Materials and Methods: This quasi-experimental, non-randomised educational interventional study was conducted among 124 2 nd -year MBBS students (who underwent complete AETCOM module 2.4) and 87 interns (who received only a brief didactic lecture) at Banas Medical College and Research Institute, Palanpur, Gujarat. A validated 30-statement questionnaire based on a 5-point Likert scale assessed five domains: structure of healthcare team, role of team members, teamwork, communication and leadership. Pre-test and post-test scores were compared using a paired t -test ( P < 0.05). Feedback was collected from students. Results: Post-test scores showed significant improvement across all domains. Statistical significance was observed in 24 out of 30 statements (80%) for students who completed the full AETCOM module, compared to more modest improvements in interns. Students demonstrated enhanced understanding of team dynamics, communication protocols and leadership qualities. Feedback indicated high satisfaction (84.5% satisfied/very satisfied) with the module’s relevance and engagement. Conclusion: AETCOM Module 2.4 demonstrated significant improvement in perceived knowledge and attitudes towards healthcare teamwork among medical students, with greater gains observed following structured experiential training compared to brief didactic exposure.
