Develops green cell manufacturing processes in European consortium, indicating significant environmental benefits.
Horizon Europe Gigagreen Project is a European project with the ambitious goal of drastically increasing the battery market by 10 points (from 6% to 16%) by 2029. This will be possible thanks to a consortium of 16 university and industrial partners from all over Europe with specific competences and knowledge. The project aims to develop a Design to Manufacture (DtM) approach for the industrial scale-up of innovative electrodes and the overall cell manufacturing process. The research of continuous improvement in terms of electrochemical performance can be obtained thanks to the coupling of Co-free cathodes and Si-C composite anodes. In the production of Si-rich anodes, the operator has to face the undesirable expansion associated to the formation of Si-Li alloy. The greatest challenge is to produce electrodes for pouch cells ntirely made by aqueous binders, to significantly reduce the environmental impact as well as drastically reduce costs and production-related risk.
