Architectural design study demonstrates a software-defined framework for road networks, indicating improved traffic flow scheduling, centralized equipment control, and enhanced system programmability.
The design of a road management and control network architecture based on SDN (Software Defined Network) is of great significance. The SDN architecture separates the control plane from the data plane, bringing a new perspective and methods to road traffic management. In order to integrate the “programmability” concept of SDN into traffic management, this paper proposes a road traffic management and control network architecture based on SDN, which consists of the operation layer, control layer, and application layer, to achieve centralized management and scheduling of traffic flow and traffic management equipment within the road network. The paper focuses on the introduction of the core centralized controller of the SDN architecture, discussing the design from the perspectives of the southbound interface, northbound interface, hierarchical architecture of the controller, and software platform. The proposed Software Defined Traffic Management (SDTM) network architecture has the distinct advantages of digitalization of traffic elements, centralized traffic control, and open programmability of the system, playing a crucial role in solving traffic congestion and improving traffic safety, and promoting the level of road traffic management to a new level.
