Key result
Atrial fibrillation is linked to ~16% thinner left atrial walls on CT vs. controls.
Why the study?
Does computed tomography (CT) imaging identify differences in left atrial wall thickness and density between patients with atrial fibrillation and controls?
Case-Control (n=187)
Single-blind
No
Does computed tomography (CT) imaging identify differences in left atrial wall thickness and density between patients with atrial fibrillation and controls?
Effect estimate: -15.5% (95% CI -23.2 to -7.8%)
Absolute Event Rate: 0.7% vs 0.9%
p-value: p=<0.001
CT imaging with automated analysis can noninvasively identify significant left atrial wall thinning and regional density alterations in patients with atrial fibrillation.

CT may identify LA remodeling in AF; leaves open whether metrics predict outcomes or guide therapy.
Dewland et al. (2012) conducted a case-control in Atrial Fibrillation (n=187). History of atrial fibrillation vs. Controls without history of atrial fibrillation was evaluated on Left atrial wall thickness (-15.5%, 95% CI -23.2 to -7.8%, p=<0.001). Patients with a history of atrial fibrillation had significantly thinner left atrial walls (-15.5%) and lower tissue density (-19.7 HU) on computed tomography compared to controls.
