This paper suggests that we are engaged in a search for a new scientific language for describing relationships, which represents a move away from thought dominated by the analysis of the individual character. The concept of temporalform is suggested as a new basis for describing relationships. The idea is that, like an improvisational jazz group, a relationship consists of the temporal forms that are created when two people are together. The implications of this concept for both measurement and the construction of theory are discussed.
