Does captopril reduce blood pressure in hypertensive animal models and humans?
The historical development of captopril introduced an orally active ACE inhibitor that effectively reduces blood pressure.
May support early ACE inhibitor development in hypertension; leaves open applicability to contemporary practice.
The history of the development of Captopril (SQ 14225), an orally active inhibitor of angiotensin-converting enzyme, is described. In addition to preventing the conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II, it also inhibits the breakdown of bradykinin. It appears to reduce blood pressure both in hypertensive animal models and in humans.
