A 51-year-old man developed severe and apparently permanent renal dysfunction after receiving platinum chemotherapy for metastatic carcinoma of the gallbladder. Blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine rose from pretreatment values of 19 mg/100 ml and 1.2 mg/100 ml to 61 mg/100 ml and 5.0 mg/100 ml respectively. The patient survives 2 months following platinum chemotherapy with no improvement in real function.
