Before making a diagnosis of peripheral neuropathy, one must demonstrate alteration of function or structure of the nerve. The time course, nerves affected, and functional impairment are helpful in differential diagnosis. Common polyneuropathies in which sensory symptoms are predominant are described, as well as those in which motor symptoms predominate.
