ABSTRACT: In Islamic studies, the relationship between Sufism and the performing arts has been approached from different angles and perspectives. This short article analyses Syed Farid Alatas's contribution to the performing arts by fusing critical social theory with Islamic thought through the lens of Yemeni Hadhrami zafin music and dance and its connection with Sufism. He writes, 'I hope to illustrate this through a discussion of the meaning of Islam and the role of music, and the role of music and dance in the worship of one Muslim community, the Hadhrami Arabs' (Alatas 2010: p. 65).
