It is often assumed that college speech courses prepare business students for subsequent public speaking experiences. Therefore, a public speaking course is often required in the business school curriculum. In this study, we examined stress and performance in a setting where students were asked to present and defend their problem analyses. Experienced stress varied independently of speech training. There was some evidence that speech-trained subjects performed at higher levels than non-speech-trained subjects.
