Does mitral valvuloplasty change pressures in the left atrium and pulmonary artery in patients with mitral stenosis?
This study evaluates the immediate hemodynamic changes in the left atrium and pulmonary artery following mitral valvuloplasty.
Immediate post-valvuloplasty hemodynamics warrant prospective confirmation; extends early commissurotomy observations but leaves practice implications open.
SIMULTANEOUS recording of pressures in the left atrium and pulmonary artery in patients with mitral stenosis at operation was first described by Munnel and Lam,1 who showed that successful mitral commissurotomy usually caused a marked decrease in the atrial and some decline in the pulmonary-artery pressure. Pressure changes in the left atrium before and after mitral valvulotomy have also been reported by Wynn and his associates.2 These authors described various pressure patterns in mitral stenosis before operation, and noted little change in the form of the pressure pulse after operation.
