Research into farmers’ decision‐making has traditionally focused on agricultural production, though many researchers have perceived changes in the agricultural landscape as secondary and mere by‐products of farming. However, recently more attention has been directed towards the landscape effects of agriculture. To understand farmers’ landscape practices, it is important to analyse how values influence farmers' landscape practice. Most often emphasis is given to either the landscape consequences, or farmers' values concerning landscape. Using a hermeneutic approach and the concept of styles, this paper explores relationships between farmers' values and their landscape practice. Five styles are presented, based on detailed empirical data from a case study in Denmark. It is concluded that in a local context, the heterogeneity of landscape practices can be conceptualised based on differences in farmers’ values. The styles identified are a step towards a differentiated understanding of relationships between farmers’ landscape practices and their values.
