In this commentary, I report research that confirms Mclntosh's contention that religion helps persons adapt to stress—both physical and psychological. The limitations of a general, all inclusive hypothesis about the functional value of religion are noted, however. Both the clinical value and the treatment difficulties of this model are noted.
