Models of forest dynamics and particularly of forest succession have been in development for the past decade. The models can be used to explore both practical and theoretical aspects of the dynamics of natural forests. This paper covers the different types of forest succession models and their underlying assumptions and strong points. The authors discuss the ways the models have been tested as well as some of the theoretical implications of the tests.
