ABSTRACT Floods are among the most devastating natural disasters, often causing significant economic, environmental, and social impacts. The growing need for accurate flood forecasting and management has led to advancements in modeling techniques, particularly the coupling of hydrological and hydrodynamic models. This review provides a brief overview of contemporary basin flood models, with an emphasis on coupled hydrological and hydrodynamic modeling, examining their methodologies, applications, and challenges. We highlight key developments, compare model capabilities, and propose directions for future research to enhance their utility in flood risk. The aim of this article is to inform scientists, engineers, and policymakers about recent advances in this field and to assist them in selecting models and coupling methods that best suit their objectives.
