The accurate flow rate measurement is fundamental in various fields, particularly in spirometry and assisted mechanical ventilation. This article aims to provide an overview of the different types of flowmeters, highlighting their working principles, advantages, and limitations. It begins with traditional devices commonly used in spirometry, such as turbine, electromagnetic, and Coriolis flowmeters, focusing on the main limitations in terms of precision and reliability in clinical settings. Pulmonary ventilators employ technologies that offer higher accuracy and reliability than spirometers, such as variable-orifice flowmeters, hot-wire anemometers, ultrasound flowmeters, and Fleisch pneumotachographs. Finally, the potential of 3-D printing is explored, as it has opened new opportunities for the development of flowmeters, integrating emerging technologies, such as fiber optics and micro-electro-mechanical systems. Current limitations, future trends, and challenges are also discussed to guide further innovations and enhance the practical usability of flowmeters in clinical applications.
