Background: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic autoimmune-mediated disease of the skin and mucous membranes.Though many treatment modalities are available, they are seldom without any adverse effects.Scarce evidence in previous studies for the efficacy of therapies has emphasized the need for new options that present without adverse effects.Hence, we aim to compare the therapeutic efficacy of Aloe Vera (AV) gel and triamcinolone acetonide on the management of symptomatic OLP.Materials and methods: Fifty patients confirmed with a histopathological diagnosis of OLP were included in the study.Appropriate informed consent was obtained from all.The study sample is divided into two groups, viz., group A -25 patients received 0.1% Triamcinolone acetonide (Kenacort 0.1%) and group B -25 patients received AV gel (Forever Living Gel) ter die sumendum (TDS) for 8 weeks. The pain and/or burning sensation and size of lesions were assessed at each visit. Results: There is better improvement in burning sensation/pain, size of the lesion in patients receiving AV gel when compared to patients receiving triamcinolone acetonide (p 0.000). Conclusion:In our study, the AV gel has been shown as a promising mode of treatment in OLP in both efficacy and safety. Therefore, the authors recommend that it can be included as an effectual protocol in treating symptomatic OLP.
