This invited expert interview examines the current state of women’s and perinatal mental health in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), highlighting the profound impact of sociocultural, structural, and geopolitical determinants on mental health outcomes. High prevalence rates of depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder are documented, particularly among women exposed to conflict, displacement, and gender-based inequities. The need for culturally adapted assessment tools, integrated care models, and gender-sensitive mental health strategies embedded within maternal healthcare systems is highlighted. The article advocates for a life-course and public health approach, positioning maternal mental health as a critical early intervention point with far-reaching implications for women, children, and communities.
