THE GUIDE for the Evaluation of Hearing Handicap has required periodic revisions as new information has become available. The last revision was in 1965. This communication represents a change in the previous formula and details the reasons for the modifications. This is the effort of the American Academy of Otolaryngology Committee on Hearing and Equilibrium and the American Council of Otolaryngology Committee on the Medical Aspects of Noise and represents approximately two years of work. Both committees unanimously endorse the new formula, and the Committee on Hearing and Equilibrium, particularly its Subcommittee on Conservation of Hearing, was responsible for writing and revising the text. The Board of Directors of both the American Academy of Otolaryngology and the American Council of Otolaryngology have approved this modified formula.
