If one requires as an equilibrium condition that the creation rate for gravitons or minimally coupled massless scalar particles vanishcs in the radiation-dominated early universe, then the expansion of the universe must be isotropic and the cosmological constant must be zero. A similar equilibrium condition involving massive particles is also discussed.
