Statsistical approaches to water quality evaluation and parameter estimation are investigated. Water quality indices for the Chao Phraya River in Thailand are developed using the techniques of cluster type analysis, factor analysis, and multiple regression. Results of factor analysis are also used to assess the possible reduction in the number of variables measured, adequacy of sampling locations, and the underlying causes of pollution.
