SUMMARYIt is proposed to measure the specular-reflection from various materials and to determine objective gloss which defines surface characteristics only. Samples are mounted on a circular cylinder which is spun rapidly. Large angles of incidence are employed. The brightness of the image of a source reflected specularly from the cylindrical sample is photometered by means of an optical pyrometer. Actual results show that gloss so measured is independent of the brightness of the back-ground (diffuse reflection).
